Italy built Europe's first purpose made high speed railway, and its trains still run from city center to city center at a pace that makes a car feel like a mistake. Venice to Florence is two hours, and Florence to Rome one hour and twenty minutes. Between the cities, the regional lines climb into hills that have looked the same for five hundred years.
Our Italian journeys are shaped around the things that close and the things that fill: the museums closed on Mondays, the Palio that takes over Siena twice each summer, and the access fee days in Venice. Once those are right, the rest of the country arranges itself around a long lunch.
