North over the Drumochter Pass

Edinburgh Waverley to Inverness. About three hours forty on the direct service.
The direct services are the ones worth taking; journeys with a change along the way run slower.
The line climbs to Drumochter, at 1,484 feet the highest point on Britain's main line railway, then over a second summit at Slochd and down to the Moray Firth. Inverness is small, and that is the point: it is the door to the Highlands. Walk the Ness Islands the first evening, a chain of wooded islands joined by white Victorian footbridges, and finish at Hootananny, where there is live music every night of the year.

Day 5
Culloden at first light, dolphins on the tide
Inverness and the Black Isle
Go to Culloden before the visitor center opens. The battlefield is open at any hour and free, and at eight in the morning in the rain it is something other than a heritage site. Clava Cairns, four thousand years older, is three hundred yards away. Then north onto the Black Isle to Chanonry Point, where bottlenose dolphins hunt salmon in the narrows a few yards from the shingle. Go on the rising tide, from about an hour after low water, or do not go. A private driver makes this day easy. Dinner at Rocpool, back on the river.
