Europe

Scotland

Scotland is small enough to cross in a day and large enough to spend a lifetime in, and the railway runs through the best of it. Edinburgh is one of the most handsome cities in Europe, and its reputation still undersells it. North of Perth the line climbs into country that stops behaving like a place with roads, and from Inverness four lines fan out to the coasts.

We research Scotland the way we research everywhere: against the venue's own published information, in the current season, with the closing days written down. If a fact is not findable on the operator's own site in a couple of clicks, it is not in our books.

Highlights

  • Eat in Leith at least once; three of Edinburgh's seven starred restaurants are there
  • Ride the Kyle Line west from Inverness and get off at Plockton
  • Culloden before the visitor center opens, at any hour, for nothing
  • Dolphins from the shingle at Chanonry Point, on a rising tide
