Scotland is small enough to cross in a day and large enough to spend a lifetime in, and the railway runs through the best of it. Edinburgh is one of the most handsome cities in Europe, and even its reputation undersells it. North of Perth, the line climbs into country that stops behaving like a place with roads, and from Inverness four lines fan out to the coasts.
